The Dahlia Pilot: Dialysis Transportation

Individuals who regularly receive dialysis treatments have unique transportation needs. In 2013, Ride Connection received a grant from the Administration for Community Living Transit Planning for All to further investigate these needs.

Through a process of involving community members and people with kidney disease as well as medical and transportation professionals, Ride Connection got to the heart of existing transportation challenges for people who receive dialysis. We found that without reliable, flexible and affordable transportation, people with kidney disease may experience a negative health impact.

We are now acting on the information gleaned from our research and a pilot program is underway. Ride Connection is working with one dialysis clinic and with a cadre of customers and volunteers to provide rides for individuals to and from treatment. We have instituted new processes in order to address wait times and overall customer comfort and have developed a one-of-a-kind training program specifically for drivers who provide rides to and from dialysis.
